Nvidia Drivers Catalina

Drivers

Because of new macOS software (e.g. FCPX, Motion) requirements (Mojave/Catalina) I upgraded my main machine to macOS Catalina. This way I lost GPU Cycles rendering option on a Mac.
I decided to use a temporary solution – bought a PS and use it as a Blender Cycles Nvidia remotely controllable slave machine.
I tested many VNC apps and MS Remote Desktop (also with nvidiaopenglrdp.exe NV OGL accelerator) and finally found Steam local-network streaming solution usable. First test shows that image quality is quite good and latency low enough for comfortable work (for me).

Nvidia

Side effect of this solution is much better Eevee performance as NVIDIA/AMD PC OpenGL drivers are much faster than OpenGL drivers built in macOS.
I use also MS Remote Desktop app for PS management.
Now I have stable Mac (without Nvidia crap drivers) all great macOS apps and a window with Blender GPU Cycles on a Mac.

Tips:

  • don’t add a Blender to your Mac Steam app library. Add Blender to PS library only.
  • you can add a non-steam app to library (ADD A GAME / ADD A NON-STEAM GAME - bottom left corner). Blender works just fine
  • if you have black stripes above/below Blender in full screen try to use Window/Toggle Window Fullscreen (in Blender menu)
  • I remapped Cmd to Control (Left Windows to Control) key on Windoze to make it usable (SharpKey app)
  • I also flipped mouse scroll in Windoze registry (https://www.windowscentral.com/how-reverse-scrolling-direction-windows-10)
  • after using MS Remote Desktop there is OGL error in Windoze. Just start Blender streaming again

So no nvidia web drivers for Mojave or Catalina. Joined Mar 28, 2020 Messages 5 Motherboard Gigabyte GA-B250-HD3P CPU i5-7500 Graphics GTX 960. Does any one of you here knows anything about Nvidia Geforce For Macos Catalina??? The drivers for the 6th and 7th gen Kepler cards are already in macOS Catalina. If you are talking about newer RTX cards there are no drivers for Catalina. Here you can find a list of Nvidia Web Drivers for macOS available for download. If you are having trouble installing the web drivers try the alternative method: Alternative method to installing Nvidia Web Drivers in High Sierra. High Sierra Web Drivers. 10.13.6 -387.10.10.10.40.105 (17G65) 10.13.5 -387.10.10.10.35.106 (17F77).

Perhaps someone will find it useful.

Catalina Nvidia Drivers Hackintosh

I hadn’t realised this topic has been duplicated in this thread. I’ll post here too if that’s ok. I have been keeping tabs on the Nvidia drivers for Mojave situation, but now I’m posting as my situation has just changed big time and I’m facing a dilemma.

I have been running a late 2009 mac pro flashed to 5,1 with a GTX 980ti. Obviously stuck on 10.13.6.

Well the 980ti seems to have just died. It’s been randomly crashing during gaming using bootcamp recently and tonight it seems to have just completely died. Popped the GT120 in (which I’ve had for up updates and a safety net) and it all booted back to life.

I’m going to try testing the 980 in a friends PC tomorrow to confirm, but I’m not hopeful.

So the decision we have all faced on whether or not to switch to AMD is upon me now. If I stayed with Nvidia I’d go for a lower end card (although all lower end cards seem better now than my 980ti), so something like a GTX1060 for around £210.

Geforce Experience

I have zero knowledge of AMD cards and where I need to be looking in terms of price / power, which brings me to the next important point.

I work as a video editor so I rely heavily on CUDA, so moving to AMD is a concern in that regard. But is metal a viable alternative if Im running the latest MacOS?

If I am not mistaken, 10.14 has dropped support for MacPro 5,1 (or is it supported and only 10.15 has dropped support?) but isn’t there usually a way around this?

TLDR / Questions:

Nvidia Drivers Catalina Installer

1: General consensus on sticking with Nvidia on 10.13.6 or switch to AMD?
2: If switch, what card would be recommended for heavy video editing (Premiere Pro).
3: Is metal comparable with CUDA for video editing?
4: Is upgrading to 10.14/10.15 possible for my 2009 5,1 using workarounds?
